Award winning South African fashion designer, Thebe Magugu stands a chance of bagging yet another international win as he makes the 2021 Woolmark Prize Top 6.
After announcing the news of who will be competing in the next round, the top 6 is as follows:
- Thebe Magugu (South Africa)
- Kenneth Ize (Nigeria)
- Lecavalier (Canada)
- Casablanca (France)
- Bethany Williams (United Kingdom)
- Matty Bovan (United Kingdom)
As they stand the contestants are competing for the grand prize of AU$200 000 (R2.2m) as well as the opportunity to sell their garments at retailers around the globe.
Taking to his Instagram, the talented designer expressed his feelings of gratitude for the opportunity, saying:
“I am so honoured to be part of the 2021 International Woolmark Prize as a Top 6 Finalist. I would like to thank @thewoolmarkcompany for this incredible opportunity and to congratulate my fellow fived finalists, all of whom are doing their part through fashion to address a variety of key issues our industry grapples with.”
Currently the contestants have been tasked with the challenge of creating a Merino wool collection under the sustainability focused theme, “Less is More”, which will then be reviewed by the judges early next year in February. The judging panel for the Woolmark Prize consists of industry experts including Sinead Burke, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and Tim Blanks of which all face the difficult decision of selecting the competition winner.
