Music is a lively world full of talented people whose love for music goes beyond limits, making a lasting impact. Austin Baloyi, also known as Tyler ICU, represents this spirit through his deep passion for music, thoughtful nature, and sense of humor. His story in the music world is all about finding inspiration, expressing himself, and staying dedicated to his art.
Austin Baloyi’s stage Tyler ICU has its roots in two distinct stages of his life, each bearing a symbolic significance. “Tyler” became a part of his identity during his primary school days, when a girl remarked that he bore a resemblance to someone named Tyler. This seemingly casual remark, taking hold of his identity, would eventually become a significant facet of his artistic persona.
The second part of his name, “ICU,” emerged during his high school years, a period marked by his interest in crafting hip hop beats. An encounter with a friend who, upon hearing Tyler’s beats, commented that they were so compelling that they could “put people in ICU,” and just like that, that’s how the stage name Tyler ICU came about, crazy right?
Tyler ICU draws inspiration from his father, whose influence played a huge role in shaping his musical journey. His father’s role as a DJ at a local club ignited his passion for music at a young age. After school, Tyler would hastily change out of his uniform and eagerly make his way to his father’s gig, immersing himself in rhythms, vibrant melodies, and electric atmosphere. These experiences not only kindled his love for music but also instilled in him a keen sense of discipline and dedication to his craft.
Tyler confidently began creating his hit song “Mnike,” the song’s creation came from the beautiful beats that came together in his mind. He was sure the song would be a big success because he felt a strong connection to it. This led him to ask Tumelo Mokoena to add his meaningful lyrics to the song, bringing it to life.
The birth of his own record label, Baby Blue, stands as a testament to his unwavering resolve to pay forward the invaluable opportunities that shaped his journey. He wanted to create a place where new talents could get the support and guidance they needed to succeed in the music industry just like how, DJ Maphorisa and Riky Rick held his hands when he was starting out in the industry. His record label is all about giving upcoming artists the opportunity to grow and succeed without being held back by the usual challenges that come with starting out in the industry.
Looking back on his difficult journey and the many things he learned, Tyler ICU shared some wise advice with his younger self. He said, “It’s okay to be unique,” showing that he learned how important it is to be yourself. This advice reflected Tyler ICU’s belief in the power of being different and how it can make a positive impact on the world. He wanted his younger self to embrace his own unique qualities because they would ultimately help him achieve his creative goals.
