“Umkhonto Wesizwe – Mandela’s Secret Army” is a film by Osvalde Lewat that explores the lives of former uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) members who dedicated themselves to the liberation of South Africa. The film reflects on the intense commitment of young men and women, some even in their teens, who risked their lives for the dream of a free South Africa.
These young guerilla fighters are now aging veterans, and the film poses the question of how history will remember them. It delves into their current whereabouts and the reconciliation of their past dedication to liberation with a present reality that often overlooks their contribution.
Osvalde Lewat, the mastermind behind the film, is a Cameroonian-born photographer, director, and writer. She has gained recognition for her award-winning documentary films addressing socio-political subjects, sharing her visual and narrative universe with the world.
