Nalu’s sound encompasses a collection of genres and influences. With the use of elements from jazz, R’nB, soul, acoustic, classical, alternative and lo-fi sounds, she explores themes of womanhood, love, spirituality, growth and desire. On Deeper, she takes a step further and allows to see her songwriting to interact with Youngsta CPT’s raps.
What inspired Deeper?
I grew up with old school, R’nB and Hip Hop love songs as the soundtrack to my life. From Ashanti and Ja Rule to Beyoncé and Jay-Z, I fell in love with that back and forth story-telling between two lovers; that chemistry that only R’nB can make you feel! I drew on those influences and my own experiences of love to write a cheeky story about falling in love, playing games, intimacy and everything in between. I’d say the deeper story is pretty sensual with a lil’ bit of spice!
How do you want people to feel when they listen to Deeper?
I want people to move when they listen to this song! I want them to feel it inside, to feel free, to feel sexy and to feel like the baddest in the room. They gotta channel that 90s R’nB energy. This is the song that will give you the confidence to go up to your crush and tell them whassup. Period.
What can we expect next from you?
I’m dropping a full body of work in October! I am SO excited for this. It’s a colourful project telling stories of love and lust, demons and desire and introspection with your inner self.
What did you include YoungstaCPT on Deeper and how was this experience of making the song?
I was in the studio with producer and sound engineer, Kay Faith, whilst she was mixing and mastering my project. I showed her the track and asked, “What are the chances of getting Youngsta to feature on this?”. She said she’d show it to his team… they loved it, he loved it, he came to the next session and we recorded it.
It was such a pleasure to work with him and see his creative process. He literally did the verse in one take, the first take, and it was perfect! He is incredibly talented. After conversations with him and Kay, I left the studio feeling so inspired! I feel really grateful to be able to create with somebody whom I look up to. From bumping his music in high school to creating dope art with him? That’s wild! What a blessing. And with both of us repping Kaapstad, you already know the creative chemistry and the sauce is immaculate.
