UPZ, the latest producer to take the spotlight in Soul Candi Records’ latest Pioneers of House series has been wowing crowds during his stay in the country. The man behind the UPZ moniker is Avi Elman, a Tel Aviv-based producer and DJ who is globally recognized for his inspired fusion of house, soul, latin, afro-carib, urban and nu disco sounds. Since his arrival, UPZ has rocked clubs in Pretoria, Rustenburg and across borders in the Botswana’s capital Gaborone. This weekend he played at Soul Candi’s wildly successful Spring Fiesta followed by an album launch at legendary party spot, Joe’s Butchery in Alexandria.
Fans can look forward to the imminent release of the video to his new single ‘Afrika Wo-man’ and its accompanying video as well as an upcoming gig in Durban at Gagasi’s Nightlife Sessions at Empyre, this Saturday. In 2009, UPZ had a massive hit— ‘Pure Surprise’, which dominated the charts and airwaves becoming one the biggest anthems of the year. Sensing a connection with SA, UPZ has maintained his presence charts – in 2010 he had two – hits a remix of DJ Qness’ ‘Uzongilinda’ and ‘Believing’ feat Kafele. His single ‘What’s The Point’ hit the number 1 spot on YFM’s Hot 99 Dance charts and he has just unveiled a brand new single, ‘Afrika Wo-man’.
Although Elman was born in Israel, Elman has deep ties to Africa. He spent his childhood in Kenya and South Africa—where he developed a passion for Jazz, African and soulful grooves as well as being active in various live music acts. Upon his return to Israel, Avi set up a recording studio and independent record label, soWHAT records. His deep, soulful style as a DJ has placed him behind the controls in top clubs in Tel-Aviv and overseas. Elman’s connection with South Africa remains strong as he continues to collaborate with local artists.
