Destiny magazine readers already know that money doesn’t necessarily buy you style, but the Skip and Destiny Fashion Exchange that took place on 26 June was a great opportunity to put that that theory into practise. The 150 ladies who attended the event at newly refurbished The Maslow Hotel in Sandton swopped high-fashion and designer clothes without any money exchanging hands. This event – the first in a series of six – saw the hotel’s conference centre transformed into a stylish pop-up shop with über chic celebrities like Tembisa Kani and Dineo Moeketsi mingling with Destiny readers. With background music courtesy of all-girl group The Muses, guests were treated to the A-list lifestyle – sipping champagne and nibbling on canapés while the shopped till they dropped and bagged items from designers such as Hunadi, Scrabbyl, Kiyomi and Morphe on the rails.
As If the clothes and fabulous company were not enough, the attendants also received tips from style icon, singer and DJ, Unathi Msengana who graced the event as the main speaker. She shared her life story, punctuating it with anecdotes of how her style has evolved over the years. Nkayi – who also mingled with guests – was frank about how being in the public eye can be a daunting task at times and how she keeps her family life private. Style guru and Expresso Morning Show’s resident fashion director, Alexis Chaffe, educated the ladies about different body shapes and gave style tips on how best to dress for one’s body shape.
Guests were then ushered into the fashionably decorated conference centre, which had been transformed into a white oasis with blue and red accents. The garments that guests had handed in as part of their entrance ticket to the event had now been colour coded and hung up according to a co-ordinating sticker system on the tags, ready to be snapped up! Up for grabs were designer items including dresses from Hip-Hop, boots from Country Road and a pair of FENDI heels!
The next Skip Fashion Exchange takes place on 1 August in Pretoria and on 23 August in Johannesburg. Tickets cost R180 and guests need to bring three or more high-fashion items to swap.
